The Group’s written constitution requires it “to advance public awareness of contemporary visual art by holding exhibitions annually”.
Once again The London Group Annual 2025 delivers a wide range of work in diverse media including painting, photography, mixed media, video, sculpture, digital and installation. As ever, the exhibition does not follow any specific exhibition theme. Presenting a great opportunity for members to show recent work or that not previously exhibited – Freed from the constraints of a specific brief and offering an intriguing and, eclectic mix of member’s practice for visitors to experience.
This rich diversity continues to be a major strength of The London Group which was formed by an amalgamation of the Camden Town Group and the English Cubists (later Vorticists) in 1913. This grouping of radical young artists came together as a reaction to the stranglehold which the Royal Academy had on exhibiting new work. Founder members included Walter Sickert, Harold Gilman, Percy Wyndham Lewis, Jacob Epstein, Sylvia Gosse, Nan Hudson, Ethel Sands and Jessie Etchells. Today, the focus is very much on self-generated exhibitions curated and managed by its members.
